Steamed Idli

Idli is a soft and fluffy South Indian steamed dish made from a fermented batter of rice and lentils. Light, healthy, and easy to digest, it makes a perfect breakfast or snack. Traditionally served with chutney and sambar, it’s both nutritious and satisfying.

Ingredients:

  • Rice (typically parboiled or idli rice)
  • Urad dal (split black gram lentils)
  • Water (for soaking and batter)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Fenugreek seeds (a small pinch)

Recipe:

  • Wash and soak rice and urad dal separately for 4–6 hours.
  • Grind urad dal into a smooth, fluffy batter.
  • Grind rice into a slightly coarse batter and mix with urad dal batter.
  • Add salt and mix well; let the batter ferment overnight.
  • Grease idli molds and pour the fermented batter into them.
  • Steam the idlis in a steamer or idli cooker for 10–15 minutes.
  • Remove idlis from molds and serve hot with chutney and sambar.
